How To Exercise and Eat To Lose Belly Fat

Many of us have struggled to lose belly fat, and many of us have looked for easy ways to get rid of belly fat. We’ve bought machines and gadgets, bought books and tried various diets, and yet we are still fat. Some of us remember being gangly teenagers or lean, young adults, and we don’t quite remember when started getting fat, we just know that now we have belly fat that won’t go away.

What we fail to remember is that we did not become overweight overnight. We gained the excess weight over the years. Maybe it took four, or five, or ten, or twenty years to acquire a fat belly, so why do we think that we can get rid of it in a week?

And why do we only think about the belly fat? If you have a fat belly, then you have other body fat as well. It is unlikely that you only gained weight in your belly, so getting rid of belly fat involves getting rid of the other fat, too. You cannot just target the stomach fat. You can’t do situps and crunches to get rid of the belly fat. Situps, crunches, leg lifts and other abdominal exercises will make your abdominal muscles stronger, but they will not do much to reduce your gut.

To lose your belly fat you need to do high intensity workouts that consists mostly of big multi-joint exercises. While it is true that cardio exercises burn fat, they do not burn many calories after the exercise is over. Focusing on big multi-joint exercises for the largest parts of your body greatly increases your metabolic rate both during the workout, and for 24-48 hours after the workout. This increased metabolic rate will burn more fat after your workout. Exercises such as push-ups, squats, dead lifts, bench presses, lunges, step-ups, and lat pulls are multi-joint exercises. You do more work with these exercises because you generally move weight through a greater distance than with single joint exercises, and you engage more muscles.

In addition to your workouts, you need to the right foods. You must eat balanced meals. Fad diets that restrict any of the macro-nutrients (fats, proteins, carbohydrates) may actually cause you to lose lean muscle mass and lower your metabolic rate. Lowering your metabolic rate will work against you in your struggle to lose belly fat.

It is tempting to try fad diets, because we want to lose fat quickly. We are used to instant gratification. But resist the fad diets, because they are not sustainable. What you want to do is modify your lifestyle to include nutritious dietary habits. Eating balanced meals will provide you the vitamins, minerals, antioxidents, and enzymes that you need to live a healthier life and burn that belly fat.
